Windows XP Problem...

This happened once before, and it happened again and I really need to figure out why its happening and if theres some way to prevent it. Last night the computer was shut down normally, etc. I wake up this morning , go to turn it on and I get the message:

The following File is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System32\Config\System

And the computer just sits there.

This happened about a month or two ago and I had to reformat loosing all data in the process....Does anyone know why this is happening and if it can be fixed? Heres the computers hardware configuration:

Duron 700
IWill KK266-R
256MB Crucial\kingston ram
geforce 2 mx
netgear fa310tx
sb live mp3+
maxtor 60gb quietdrive 7200
acer 56x cdrom
benq 32x cd-rw

Thanks in advance.

I'm not positive about the cause but a hint could be:
AXIA 1.0 at 1.5GHz!
Unfortunately one of the drawbacks of overclocking is that you can corrupt some system files. Did you overclock before loading the OS? From what I understand it is not a good idea to do that. Better to run the CPU at stock speed, load the OS and then overclock. Other than that there could be a "mess" of reasons why it is happening; from a virus to a bad OS disk.
The next thing is, did you prepare for this by doing a backup of some sort in either XP Pro or third party software? Not trying to torture you, just wondering if you loaded that same backup the last time this happened. Might be some corruption included.

The system thats having the problem isnt my 1.0 at 1.5(this system has been running fine for the longest time.) Its my duron 700 system, not overclocked...specs in main post. Last time I had the problem, I totally wiped the drive, with a fresh install of XP...none of the old data was transfered over. My friend was telling me that it may be from a bad stick of ram, which im gonna check out...I do have one iffy stick in that system.

My bad for not reading close enough. 😱 I'm not sure that bad RAM could cause that though. At least not losing system files, unless you are using STR and shadowing. But, I'm a bit weak on those and couldn't really say for sure. Sorry and good luck.
Hey, at least it's a bump or two!

Somone told me to check out the ms knowledgebase...i thought that was only for msdn subscribers or something, guess not. Anyways, I found this article that tells you how to restore a corrupted registry...worked like a charm.

EXCELLENT FIND! Looks pretty involved but not a big deal when compared to reloading everything. Thanks for the link.
