Windows XP Pro on Maxtor HD

Has anyone had trouble installing Windows XP Pro on a single Maxtor 200 GB SATA hard drive? I am having a very tough time and was wondering if any other users have experienced this problem.
 
No, I am reformatting the hard drive and then trying to install Windows XP again. I misused the word reinstall there, sorry. Anyway, I did that and used both the Asus SATA drivers and MaxBlast 3. While my computer is setting up Windows, it says that "daxctle.ocx", "kernel32.dll", and "d3d8.dll" could not be installed from the boot CD. Then, the Windows XP Pro Splash screen comes up then it goes to the screen with the five tasks and the timer of how long the setup will take. My timer is permenently stuck at 39 minutes no matter how long I let it sit here. I am stuck, again. I didn't think that a Windows install could be this painstaking.... Anyone have some advice?

P.S. I tried searching the Windows site and the Maxtor site, but I didn't come up with anything.
 
Edit: At the screen with the 5 tasks and timer I get this error:

Error:
SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file. "D:\l386\asms\1000\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS.MAN" on line 4.

Hope this helps. I already checked for scratches and I did not see any. Has anyone ever heard of an XP CD that was just bad or corrupt?
 
Ok, I restarted and I got a DIFFERENT message. It started to install devices in the 5 task screen, then after a short while I got an error saying that the software didn't pass the Windows Logo test or something like that. This computer has a mind of its own.
 
Just wanted to make sure.... I've heard of problems copying files from the non-legit copies.

In your case, it sounds like it could be a bad CD. You may want to check to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your motherboard (might not be likely, since your board sounds like such a new board). You may also want to remove any other add-in cards you may have in the system (sound card, NIC, etc.) and try installing Windows on a bare system. If you have more than one RAM module in the system, try removing all but one for the Windows install.

If you're able to get Windows installed after removing your other hardware from the system, put any cards back into the system one at a time.

Not sure if this will fix your problem, but it's worth a try.

I will test this tomorrow morning when I am not as pissed off. 2 RMAs, countless drivers and BIOS updates, and now this. This is turning out to be a horrible experience for building a computer for the first time. I doubt that I will be doing this ever again.
 
Also, would it be a good idea to go to BestBuy or something and buy a new small hard drive to see if Windows would install on that hard drive? Then I would know if it was a bad hard drive or not. If I get the same error could I just return the hard drive back to BestBuy for a refund? I'm not familiar with return policies on hard drives at retail stores.
 
Ok, I tried to setup Windows again, and I got to a point where I had about 17 minutes left and everything was looking good when...

The system has been shut down.

Things seem to be getting better, hopefully I'm getting close.
 
I just checked the HCL(Hardware Compatibility List) for Windows XP Pro and it turns out that the 6Y200MO is not on the list, which is my hard drive. Do you think that this is the problem?

No, I don't think your HD is the problem at all. I'd be suspicous of a bad ide cable to the cdrom drive, bad memory, heat issues, etc. I think you are looking at the wrong thing...

Everytime I try to setup Windows at the Windows XP Professional Setup at least one of the dll/sys files fails to be installed. What is the cause of this?
 
I took the computer down to a tech support store and they said everything checked out to be ok except the motherboard, so I RMAed that and the computer worked fine after that so I don' think that its a hardware problem.

:roll: We've already established your machine is not stable, it's suprising you that your having trouble with apps now?
 
The Maxblast CD has a utility to check a hard drive. Just boot with it and find it in the menu's. It will do comprehensive testing and alert you to any problems. Simple way to determine if a hdd is bad.
 
It's highly likely that you have a memory problem or a bad IDE controller. You can run memtest to see if the memory checks out, and you can try using another IDE controller (the other one on the mobo) to see if that works better.

Either way, the issue is most likely hardware related, and has nothing to do with your hard drive. The brand and model of the hard drive does not matter as far as installing xp, unless you have the drive hooked up to an SATA controller, in which case you have to load the drivers for it. Still, that would not explain the weird (seemingly) random errors. My bet would be on memory being bad. If you have two sticks, try taking one out and reinstalling. If you get the same problems, swap them and try again, that should help you figure out if a memory stick is bad.
