Windows XP pro Gadgets

My friend doesnt have the money for windows Vista but wants the little things it offers such as its gadgets: ping monitor, ebay, ect. I know I can just download seperate programs but that means I have to run them in their own windows instead of like in vista on the sidebar. Anyways main question is how I can get his XP to look like vista for free or cheap.
