So much for people saying it was gonna cost twice as much as 2K. Everyone can afford it now.

Sure, everyone can afford the home version, at $99, but this would be a big downgrade from my Win2k pro. The home version is basically a souped-up ME. The XP pro will cost $199 for an upgrade. See here for the differences. The home edition can't do NTFS user rights, group policies, and EFS, among other security concerns I use.

You can't compare anything on the built on the NT kernal to ME. ME is based apon the old 9X kernal which is well outdated.

Sure I can. I can compare the features offered, which are basically those from ME. It's ME with a new kernel, big whoop. XP home is not equivalent to Win2k Pro.

I remember getting Pre orders and ending up seeing the released price at the office supply stores for substantially less..and I bet there will be rebates tossed around.. The price is still reasonable for all were getting here and I bet we see plenty of bargains

I agree with Mastertech01.......not to shabby!;) I was actually figuring much more for preorder price.......you'll be able to pick the pro up for $139 - $149 if XP follows history!;)

Speaking of cheap OSs, Outpost was (is) running a sale on WinMe and Win2K Pro....very nice prices for those of you who are looking to Win2k instead of WinXP.

The difference between WinXp and Win2k is just as much as that between win98 and winme.

So why bother to pay? :)

I`m buying it,I know some guys that are using XP RC1 build and it has better gaming stability then Win2000, which they was using before,so I for one as a hardcore gamer will buy XP,now just have to decide which version.

I'm buying it too. Hopefully MS in cooperation with places like Staples and Buy.com will give freebies and discounts on Windows XP Professional like they are doing with Office XP.

Any chance there will be deals on XP like Staples and OfficeMax had with Office XP for free stuff with purchase?

If you use win2k XP might be a tough swallow, but if you're still stuck with 9x, it'll be the smartest upgrade since you went from 3.1 to 95 (or 3.1 to pretty dos if you want to call it that)

I'm hoping to get it through my school...I got win2k free through a promotional school offer.

And WinXP home edition upgrade wont accept Win2k Pro. XP home will only upgrade 98 or ME.

I know of at least one game that was broken under 2k and works fine on XP. Black and White had totally messed up unplayable textures under 2000 on my system and now works fine under XP. Undying runs MUCH smoother under XP. I have no idea why this is but it seems to be running much better then 98 ran it.

I still can't afford those prices, but thankfully I get a student discount for another 2 years. If they follow their past trends the full-liscense only (no media) will be $50, or $44 for upgrade with media (for pro or home I assume, since WinMe and Win2k academic liscenses costed about the same).

So, if I bought an upgrade licence of XP, would that contain the full version on the cd, like my windows 2000 upgrade cd does?

Looking at the features of XP Home vs. XP Pro, it seems to me that XP home is just a crippled version of XP Pro. Thanks, I'll pass.
