Just a question I have.....my friends told me i could speed up my computer playing ames by adjusting the "page file" is win xp.............it was set at 3084 but he told me to go 256....i have 1 gig ram........but is lower better?? thanks alot

Letting Windows manage it is probably the best option. If you feel the need to tweak, don't set it below 1.5 times the amount of ram you have (1.5GB).

Ask your friends why they think changing the size of a file hardly being used by the OS since you have a lot of memory will make it faster?

I guess you'll have to test it with the game
I know if I run a BF1942 standalone server om my amd 2500+ system with 1 gig of memory disabling the pagefile stops long term lag.
Once the lag starts with the pagefile active it just keeps getting worse
But with it disabled it's just temporary lag when there's just too much action in one place.

But while playing games I don't notice any problems with the pagefile active
so I guess it all depends on the software or game

I really think its time we made this topic (Page File - not this particular post) a sticky.. Like the NTFS encryption one used to be (what happend to that one btw). This topic is asked about at least once, if not more, per week.

Perhaps somone more knowlegeable could make a nice detailed post.. a few paragraphs about it. And we could ask for a sticky.

See my thread on windows optimizations. It's not up yet but there will be benchmarks and performance tests of various pagefile configurations. I expect there will be no measurable difference, but we'll see.
