Windows XP: open source dvd burning software needed

I'm using DVD Shrink to rip my dvds and want to know what software you recommend for 1. viewing the dvd on my PC and 2. burning the dvd onto a blank dvd for viewing like the original (i.e., on any dvd player).

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Why does it have to be open source?
Unless you meant free, I'm not seeing the point when your going to be use it on a windows machine...

CD Burn XP (google it) is a free burning suite that supports pretty much anything you would need, including what you describe there.

Because of the DVD Decoder license fee, I don't know of any freeware DVD playback software. PowerDVD and WinDVD both have downloadable trials. Really the cheapest way to get DVD playback software is to buy a drive and use the OEM software that comes with it (usually a basic non-surround-enabled OEM version of one of the above packages).

Alternatively, you can check your PC Mfg's web site. Sometimes the PC vendor will offer a (almost invariably outdated, but still functional) DVD playback program for download, it will be similar to the above, a very basic but perfectly functional program. I've seen this from Dell / HP / Compaq / etc, but it varies from model to model.

doesnt VLC play DVDs?

VLC, Media Player, MPC, Zoom, etc will all play DVD's, but only if a DVD Decoder is installed (when you install WinDVD/etc, this gets installed).

EDIT : looks like I might have been mistaken on VLC. Interesting. I use VLC as sort of a backup player, so this somehow missed me. I wonder how they get away with the licensing fees?

Thanks for all the replies. This all came up due to an article I read about backing up DVDs, and now that 1TB drives (plus) are so damn cheap, I thought it was a good plan due to friends borrowing, kids throwing, and general misplacing of DVDs, to back them up on a drive. I started to back them up and then realized that I didn't have a way to burn them back (if original is lost) or to even play them 🙂

I'll give all these a try and see what works.

Thanks!
