PII 266 with 20GB HD, 128MB Ram. Think it will work with XP good enough with all effects turned off?

Its a Dell CPI Laptop. Its basically a play toy

It will run, but it will be incredibly slow. Windows 2000 pro would probably run better.

I'd also suggest 2kPro, you really need 192mb + of memory to run xp at a semi decent speed really 256+ I've got some P2 333 w/ 192mb of ram that once they boot up run xp pretty well for web surfing and IM / Email ect.. even w/ their slow ancient 6.4gig HDDs

No. If you can cram another 128MB RAM in there, it'll be fine.

And Win2k is just as bad. Per-SP4 it was better, but SP4 likes extra RAM just like XP.

128mb would be better suited for win2k. I have win2k running on my 64mb P-166 system. Web browsing works just as good as my faster systems. Obviously, I wouldn't want to run anything heavy, but it actually runs a lot better than with win98 on it.

Definately add memory... mymoms laptop takes forever to load with 128mb, also web pages are like a slide show. Her processor is a 900mhz mobile duron too.

I work IT at my university, and I've seen my fair share of computers that should have been junked a while ago. Ive had the pleasure of having to service some PC's with similar specs to those wou have given, and I'd have to say that win2k is definitely the way to go. XP is a little more memory intensive and has a lot of extra services that would just bog things down. You should definitely disable all unnecessary services regardless of your choice with a computer like that, though.

Visit www.blackviper.com for a full list of what services are not needed.

He he. I've occasionally wondered what would happen if I put XP on my 200Mhz Pentium 1 MMX. It's got 64MB, and that's ALL it can accept :D

Another vote for W2K, pre-SP4 (SP2 or SP3). I run W2K SP2 as my primary OS here, and i definately seems more responsive than XP, even with 768MB of RAM. I've run XP under 128MB, it's definately not pretty. Either upgrade the RAM, or stick with W2K.

well I own both

I will try both and compare.

I loaded XP on it last nite.

I am just going to use it for MSN/Email/Research using wireless connection when on campus. (UNB-University of New Brunswick offers free wireless internet up to 6GB/mth to all students for laptops).

I have a descent system (stated below) for use when I'm at my apartment.

Windows 2000 probably is the way to go, I'm going to try XP first though...i want to see just how it does run for the fun of it

I gave my grandparents a 450 PII and 256 MB of ram it runs XP fine with everything turned off I would n't want to run with lower than that though. I would reccommend getting w2k or some more RAM as well.

Sorry I know 98 sucks, but if its a play toy it will run a ton better with 98 on it. I have almost an identical machine at home and it works great with 98, and piss poor with xp.

I have a p-2 300 laptop with 96 megs of ram that runs 'okay' with windows 98. More ram would help a LOT and would likely make w2k aceptable (it ran nicely when I briefly borrowed enough ram to hit 160mb). I'm using office 97 on it too, through my own personal 'downgrade rights' program (I own xp, but it runs way too slow!);)

Same thing as you - I wanted a laptop to take on campus and use wireless. This one has the advantage of having been free, and being worth very little in case some idiot steals it.

I agree

I just want to take advantage of that high speed connection....download stuff while on campus...700-800 kb/sec is pretty nice compared to 150kb/sec at my apartment :)

I don't want to put any money in to it:)

But all in all, do you honestly think WinXP with everything effect wise turned off will run slower than Win2k?

Well, since you should upgrade the 2k install to sp4 to keep it current-ish, I think it won't make much difference.

I would run 98se on the laptop you have, if it were me. It is afterall just a toy.
