I am building a new system and want to put WIN XP on it. I saw WIN XP OEM on Ebay for a whole lot less than in the stores....What is the difference between an OEM package and a retail one for software?

Technically, if you purchase an OEM copy, it must remain with the machine you install it on. You cannot transfer it to another machine if you decide to change, whereas the retail version can be installed on any single computer that you own.

The only difference is how much Microsoft hassles you over switching out hardware in the computer. There's much more hassle with the OEM version.

That said, I would not buy Win XP over eBay, I'd imagine the chances of getting a questionable copy is quite high. I have already learned my lesson trying to buy XP cheap.

Right - because a lot of legit businesses make their money by selling products below cost...

while it may not be a major issue with those here, but you cannot get phone support from microsoft on OEM as they expect you to get support from the integrator that sold it to you. Retail boxed copies will get you 6 mos or 1yr phone support from MS...I forget
