Windows XP oem

I got my dell 1100 today. It comes with a window xp home oem cd. Is that legal for me to sell it? I peel out the COA on the bottom of my laptop and I have not register or use the cd(I have xp pro). On the cd, it says "for distribution with a new Dell Pc only". Can I install it on PCs other than Dell?

It violates Microsoft's license agreement for you to sell it or to install it on any other machine. But, morally, no one could really say you can't do those things, and legally Microsoft couldn't do anything to you because you didn't accept any license agreement or have any choice but to have that shipped to you with the computer.

Of course it IS an OEM version, so anybody buying it would have to go to Dell for support, who would probably turn them away since it's not on a Dell machine anymore, and the same if you used it on some other machine.

thanks for ur input. Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. When I say "can i install it on other PCs", I really mean that if there any thing in the cd that prevent the installation?

Yes, it checks for a Dell machine. As for the "some say", I've verified this 😉

If it's an actual, made by Microsoft CD, I can't see how it could be made to look for a Dell BIOS.

My last two dells came with a 'dell cd' that was the OS install cd...

It might work on annother machine....If not the "dell only" part is limitted to booting from the CD. If you boot from floppy (all four of them) you can install it on any machne.

Interesting point, I had only tried booting from CD (actually it wasn't on purpose, I put a dell recovery cd into my laptop instead of the ibm recover cd). However, the dell's Ive installed (I always nuke the factory image and the extra stuff it has) didn't require an license number to be entered (since it detected it was a dell). I sincerely doubt that image wouldn't require a code on other hardware (but I haven't tested that scenario)
