This was already posted and ranted about in Dave's meandering vitriolic anti-Vista thread :)

I agree on the cries of Repost, but how about we call this the "Logical Discussion About The Discontinuation Of XP OEM Through System Builders" thread, since that's sorely lacking from the other one. ;)

LoL alright :)

I think it's Microsoft's right to do this, and it makes sense from a PR standpoint. People who want XP will still be able to find it, but it sucks for those people who would just like to order a new Dell with it already loaded.

Even though large OEM's (Dell, HP, etc.) will not sell a new system with XP preoaded you will still be able to purchase it from white box system builders, Newegg and other e-tailers. :)

nowhere does it mention that retail copies won't be available. i don't get why everybody says this is the death of XP. if i wanted, i imagine i could still get MS to sell me windows 2k.

besides, what the problem? vista basic is basically xp just more secure.

Cripes, you can still find Windows 2000 for sale all over the place.

Consider three tiers of user:

- Those who want or will accept Vista preloaded (Joe Sixpack)
- Those who don't want Vista, and have the skill to reinstall their own OS (AT)
- Those who don't want Vista, but don't have the skill to reinstall their own OS (Somewhere between)

So you're saying you don't care about Group #3?

Group #3 are used to paying thinkgeek so it shouldn't be a big deal to them. Being ignorant enough to want to actually downgrade your OS and being too ignorant to actually do it pretty much go hand in hand :).

Hey I pay when my car gets a tuneup but I've chosen not to learn how to do it myself so what can I expect? It's a fair price for semi-skilled labor. Same thing with thinkgeek.

You're also forgetting #4:
Those that want Vista and are perfectly capable of installing any OS we choose.
