I am running windows XP SP2. Mobo is ASUS A8V Deluxe w/ AMD X2 4200+ 1gb ram. Problem is that when I run CPU-Z Under Processor Selection it is grayed out and shows CPU #0 (Core 0). Also when I run windows system information it only shows (1) CPU. In device manager under computer It says "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC". Under processors (2) entries are listed for the X2 4200. Something don't seem right. Some one mentioned about a "MULTIPROCESSOR" setting under computer in device manager. But I can't find it. I've loaded and reloaded VIA 4 in 1 and AMDK8.sys drivers with no luck. Please help.

Thank You
Found the following on another post. Does it mean I have to do a copmplete reinstall? Is there another way around this?

^^yes. although i think that if you've already updated to advanced configuration and power interface, that you cannot update to Multiprocessor PC without a new installation, and using the f5 key and choosing ACPI Multiprocessor PC

Update to the latest bios, then when you restart, windows should come up with a message saying something about processor junk.

Same thought, I belive XP Home is limited to 1 CPU, and Pro is limitied to 1-2 CPU.

AFAIK it's socket's not core's.

The OS wouldnt be able to tell the difference between a socket or core.

Yeah it can.
And Biostud is right, XP supports 1/2 sockets for Home/Pro no matter the amounts of cores.

Try updating the CPU driver from AMD's site, for grins (make sure you use the exe download, and not the ZIP..for some reason, the ZIP INF doesn't work the same). I'd also suggest, as above, if you haven't updated your bios, do so, making sure it's the release that explicitly states it has DC support.

I am curious how XP can tell if two cores are in one or two sockets.

After posting and trying everyone's suggestions I bit the bullet and did a "CLEAN INSTALL" like I should have done in the first place. OS is XP PRO. The only thing I did different from the install prompts was hard code the "ACPI MULTIPROCESSOR" during set up by hitting "F5". Not sure if I had to do it, but since it let me I did. Everything seems to be running fine. CPU-Z is now showing (2) cores along with task manager. Thanks again for everyones input. It was appreciated.

Good to know, I'll be going DC once they get cheaper...

It asks the CPU.
Well, heh, I guess that's kind of a silly way to put it, and actually I'm not sure if the BIOS provides the info or if the CPU itself does via CPUID flags.
Haven't bothered to look into it further than observing that RedHat EL will properly detect a dual-core chip as such rather than two single cores.

With windows don't you have that HAL stuff to deal with?

I am thinking that it takes a small upgrade with a device driver or whatnot to get the HAL upgraded to support Dual core.

By contrast in Linux you'd have to switch to a SMP-enabled kernel to go from single core to dual core, right?

it can't just like windows 2000 think a hyperthreaded CPU is a dual CPU configuration..
