Hey all, I trying to network 2 Win XP boxes and 1 win 98 box. We are currently sharing one internet connection via a 3com LinkBuilder TP/8, sn 3c16180, and it is very fast. But no matter what I do I cannot get the two XP boxes to see each other, and from past expirences, when they do see each other, how am I going to get around the logon screen. Before, no matter what I do, I can never get past it. The computers that I have worked with before have never had a password and I have tried the one and only logon. So any suggestion would be most appreciated. Thanks

To see each computer from the other make sure you share SOMETHING. Windows has an annoying habit of hiding computers if they have nothing shared, and aren't receiving a WINS broadcast (thats another topic though). Since you can share the net connection I will assume your IP setup works just find and we don't have to troubleshoot that.

As far as the users issue you need to create user accounts on each machine that match so that the computer knows who each person is when they try to connect from another computer. If you don't match the usernames then it will attempt to use the guest account for access when it can't find the user. Problem is (well if you hate some semblance of security its a problem) the guest account is disabled by default. So, enable the guest account and give it access to your share, or the preferred method is to match accounts on each computer.

If for some reason you can't browse in network neighborhood and see the computer then go to Start and then Run and type in the computername like so: \\igiveupscomputer This will open up the share list if anything is shared.

Ok, I have made some progress, they can see each other now, but when I click on the shared harddrive, it just brings me to my own harddrive!! :( With windows XP can I only share folders , and not the entire drive?? THanks-- Garrett

SHaring an entire drive isn't really a good idea anyway...I guess if you're on a home network it wouldn't matter so much, but still. On my server I have basically one share that I put everything in, that way it's like having a whole drive shared but it isn't. And if you're desperate to only map to the root of a drive, they are actually shared by the OS as C$ (or whatever drive letter you're using). The "$" hides it from broadcast.

Thanks, how the hell do I get past this password part?? I have assigned no passwords, and I have tried to enable the guest account and get nothing. Gives me an error message say "AMDSHRINE is not accessable on the network....contact your network administrator. " With 98 it was simple now with XP is it hell. Thanks-- Garrett
