Don't know if anyone has heard about this. It seems kinda cool (not that I'll use it) but it has some good ideas for the lesser user. Some of the features would be nice to be implimented with WinXP Pro like the Live TV thing

WinXP Media Center Edition

if this is a repost lmk

There's no way I'm sitting around my apartment with my friends to look at my 17" LCD monitor from my couch.

Hmmm, I have a Tivo and a TV

and I also have a computer and Divx

so uh yea it has a spiffy remote

and all this "My" labeling, My TV, My pictures, My music, My videos, My underpants, must die!
(you would think the RIAA or MPAA would have a lawsuit since most everything that turns up in a "my" folder is not by their definition yours)

it has a lot of specific hardware requirements, like the tuner and the video card. and for it to be a good experience for the user the drivers have to be rock solid so that means only testing with one set of hardware and software, so you can see why you would need to have a very specific system to use it.

Looks alright. I'd have to read some independent reviews...

It would suck if that's an IR and not an RF control though.

So all of a sudden Microsoft is unable to support different types of tuner's and video cards? Thats a load of crap. I don't see any reason why it can't be just as stable as XP Pro on a wide range of hardware.

Then why on the video do they show some guy using it on an LCD? I'm not saying it can't be hooked up to a TV, I'm just saying that to me it would be a better thing to have in that video because the damn LCD is tiny! :)

why dont you read what i wrote. This has to work just as good as any appliance in your hometheater thats why they can only test and support a specific set of hardware and software.

Dont forget they want a stranglehold on the market, so they can charge over $1000 when a $250 PC can do everything that the $1000 can do....

What? You're telling me I can't upgrade my microwave to use a better rotating platter and LCD display and expect the same reliability?

People assume that since this is essentially a PC underneath that it IS a PC -- it's not. They should think about it in the abstract, an appliance, and treat the concept as such.

PS - you would never overclock your washing machine. :D

Exactly. They are making friends with compaq and dell and whoever makes these things, so they go through the trouble of even building them to begin with. There is no profit in selling computers with 700mhz processors anymore, even though thats all thats really needed for any of these HT PCs.

If I can't build it, I won't buy it!

The whole notion of trusting MS with your A/V multimedia system seems a little absurd. I can just see it... you must have an internet connection so they can verify the serial number of the dvd you're watching... and they'll break the OS and make you call in if you don't have the proper digital signiture on your mp3s... or it will only play .wmv files or other such nonsense.

No thanks.

PS

does anyone remember the MS cordless phone/answering system? Just because they make it doesn't mean they'll stick with it (or that people will buy it).

I disagree. Windows already has support for video cards and sound cards and such. It would take very little work to add native TV tuner support (come on, there are only a handful of tv cards on the market).

Most likely they made a sweet deal with the OEMs....

Anyway, one of those sweet Shuttle MiniPCs with ATI's remote control (you can buy it separately) will do the same thing. May not be as easy, but its waaay more flexible and configurable. And you can have it now...
