a friend of mine got this machine from her brother who passed away and wanted to use it in her office as the main machine (she has less than 10 machines and very simple shares of a db and printer so xp pro would be fine). i told her i would take a look and the damn thing has xp media center on it. how limited is media center's networking? is it even stable? is xp mce morel ike xp pro or home w/ the media center add-ons?

imho she needs at least xp pro, but i need the info about mce to tell her the reality.

:frown:

It lacks Domain support however, IIRC.

Correct, but I'm sure I read about a workaround. In the grand scheme of things, MCE is for home use and domains are for work, so it depends on if the work setup is peer to peer or client-server.

Wrong. Its XP. The feature set is similar to Pro *minus* domain and cached credentials support but plus media center applications.

Both of these can be kludged into working with some hacks from Googling. You won't have any problems with networking on this machine - I used an XP MCE machine for a file server for about a year.

would you want it be the server for your biz? a home server not such a big deal, but a biz? the hardware is a bit old too and i know that is not a big deal, but it is a sluggish machine. maybe i need to talk her into at least a different case - she will be doing elective surgery and that is a lot about brands and appearing to not use bottom of the bucket anything, so this e-machine kinda cheapens her a bit imho.
