Windows XP login screen dissaperead

Came into work this morning and my computer will not show the classic login screen like normal. Shows the standard blue background and I can use my mouse but that's it.
Safe mode does the same thing and recovery console doesn't work. Any ideas on what to do?

that's funny - my dad called me up complaining about the same exact thing - I told him I'd look at it either today or tomorrow.

What does it do when you ctrl-alt-del after booting? Can you run task manager?

If you can, windows is there, but your shell (explorer.exe) isn't running.

Does not respond to any key strokes. Just did a repair install of windows and it still does not show a login or anything else.

Sounds like Malware Hijack....

I have had several calls today from some of my "Regular Customers" complaining about a "Massive Infection" they got from Facebook yesterday... Haven't looked at any of these yet.

September 14 was my day of infamy. Windows Update installed a "security" update and told me to reboot Windows XP. Rebooted and got a blue screen telling me to click on the user to logon; however, I run as administrator and do not use password, thus nothing to click. Nothing worked. Repair did not work. Had to fresh install Windows 7 RC which I do not like. I lost my windows XP key sticker and when I tried to reinstall using the old CD using the latest key from my computer it was not valid. Limping along with W7 now and fixing some of the bad stuff but much left to improve to equal XP. Windows Media Player always starts with little windown instead of giving full screen. Too many things do not work to suit me. I don't know if I will spend $90 to get a new XP3 but Windows 7 is going to have to improve a lot for me to ever pay for it.

I have a new name for 7: Windows Can't

Really....have had no problems at all with Win 7 so far, and have put all sorts of programs on it without incident or such. Sounds like PEBKAC to me.
