Thats because XP was the target.

Why are people up in arms about XP being in use? If it works then why the fuck should we go win7 or win8? Im in IT over 28 years and I will only have my staff/users upgrade/update when it is absolutely necessary. Just because win7 is there it doesnt mean I need to spend 100k on updates when XP still suits my needs.

Agreed. MS seems to pump out a new OS every other year or so just to increase their revenue stream. If you think about it ... if they did it right they wouldn't need to release another OS ... and increase their profits. Oh wait ...

XP is fine if it does what you need it to do. Also, not everyone can afford or knows how to upgrade their OS every few years.

They do it every 3 years now to avoid the problems they had with the XP to Vista migration.

MS has never had quick or good enough development to release a new anything every year.

It's every 3 years. And I see nothing wrong with a company wanting to make money. I bet you also disagree with apple releasing a new iphone every year. Or car manufacturers refreshing their lineup every few years. Using your logic, if they made cars right back in the 1890's, we'd still be driving those same models today. If intel made their first microprocessor right back in 1971, they wouldn't have needed to produce new ones. They're just a bunch of money whores.

Killing off support for XP is overdue. Ten years of support is enough for any OS!

If Corporations aren't going to upgrade until they're forced to, so be it.

From a Microsoft point of view I can see why they want to kill it off. It's like "ok guys we made something better, now why don't you guys switch to it so we can stop wasting our time with this thing!"

What they need to do though is have a consistent release schedule so enterprises can plan accordingly. So maybe every 7 years have a long term support version. Any other version between would be shorter term and more geared to end users that can upgrade more easily than enterprises. So a LTS could have maybe 15 years of support from the release date, for example.

It would still be up to enterprise environments to grab the first beta and start testing their internal stuff to get ahead of the game though. I worked in lot of environments that have not even started considering the upgrade from XP to 7, let alone plan it. The hospital I worked at had lot of proprietary software that does not even run in 7. The vendors have no intentions of changing this.

I attended a training session for Windows 8 last week. One of the interesting side discussions was about Vista, and how it was originally supposed to be out in ~04/05. They had something close to pre-release, and then went back to the drawing board to beef up security of the OS.

It's all Microsofts fault that Windows XP is still loved so much because they tried to get people to downgrade to Windows Vista which was never going to work. Although Windows 7 is good, I don't like it much so when I am done with Windows XP I will be using something Linux instead because i am not a gamer.
