Windows XP is Still The Dominant OS

It always amazes me the amount of luddites there are in the tech communities on the internet. Not moving forward or stripping a new OS for an old one is a badge of honor.

I use what I want to use and never just because everyone else is using it. Windows 7 is more popular than Windows XP now but maybe Windows 8 will soon to be more popular than Windows 7 and the cycle goes on. lol 😉
 
Anyone who cannot see how much more superior Win7 is to XP ought to be using a Mac or Linux. Seriously, XP is not even in the same league.

I wouldn't go that far, anyone that can see that Win7 is better than XP is also smart enough to run Linux anyway so they should probably just go that route and stop worrying about it. =)

Why are people up in arms about XP being in use? If it works then why the fuck should we go win7 or win8? Im in IT over 28 years and I will only have my staff/users upgrade/update when it is absolutely necessary. Just because win7 is there it doesnt mean I need to spend 100k on updates when XP still suits my needs.

Because support ends in under 2 years IIRC and keeping somewhat up to date and maintaining your systems is part of dealing with computers. These things aren't dumb appliances that can be used until they physically stop working, despite what many people think. There is administrative overhead associated with each PC and part of that is patching and updating periodically.

Right, so within 2 years it will become necessary. It is not necessary now, it wasnt necessary 2 years ago when win7 came out it sure as hell wasnt necessary 5 years ago when vista came out.
 
Although I use Win 7, there is nothing wrong with XP. Most of our machines at work are still XP. The great thing about XP is that it being around for so damn long that so much software plays nicely with it.

I don't understand comments like "XP is not in the same league as MacOS or Linux". By what standard? It sure as hell has a crap load more software options and plays very nicely on corporate networks.

Necessary is subjective, however it's been a good idea for at least 2 years and depending on the size of your organization you should have already started the migration. Or at the very least the planning of the migration.

I'm sure 7 has lot of bugs too. Connect a windows 7 machine straight to the internet and it will probably eventually get hacked. XP is more targeted but I'm sure lot of viruses target 7 too now.

Heck even a Linux machine improperly configured thrown straight online wont last very long.

I've got an XPe machine sitting right next to me. It is running off a 1GB compactflash card and has 254MB free space! Just try that with 7. With ewf enabled it is pretty fast.

And what percentage of those are the FCKGW version of XP?

Versus how many copies of Windows 7 or Linux are out there that are locked out of updating?

The last two virus cleanups I did, both were XP SP2 (legitimate OEM versions, nothing illegal). Is Windows 7 or Linux any better if the user does not update the software?

Work is XP Pro SP4 (and some 2000 Pro SP4 still) with plans to move to Win 7 later this year.

At home I am moving from XP Pro to Win 7 Ultimate/64 bit, so far so good with updated versions of several applications (Office 2010, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3.6) that take advantage of 64 bit hardware & 16GB memory.

Legacy applications are working fine so far.

Win 7 seems faster but no doubt this is because it is running on much more powerful hardware (i7-2600, 16GB, SSD C drive, etc.). I doubt it would run well on the Dell 8400 (Pentium 4, 4GB, mechanical C drive) that runs XP Pro reasonably well.

In my view there is nothing wrong with staying on XP especially if you don't need 64 bit support, or if you are running older hardware and / or applications. At some point there won't be drivers, fixes, etc. and even now I don't think you can actually get just an XP license by itself for personal use.

Installed Win 7 on my laptop as soon as it came out, then on my desktop a year later...I've never looked back and I even got lucky to get one of the first win 7 laptops in my new job, works without a hitch, same as my own laptop and desktop.

To those who refuse to upgrade from XP: that's ok too, everyone should be free to use the OS they like, as soon as you take good care of it so that it doesn't boggle my network down or you're not bugging me because your computer crashed or doesn't support the latest programs or peripherals, or you can't figure out why it doesn't run the latest games or you got a computer with more than 2 GB of RAM and it's going to waste, you can use Win Me for all I care.
