Hi all,

I'm trying to load Windows XP Pro on a laptop and I think the cdrom drive is flaky.
The drive appears to work fine for a while then start having problems copying files.

The installation is on a partitioned and formatted hard drive.

Is there any way to install the XP files to the hard drive and then execute them from
there instead of installing with the cdrom drive?

Used to do it with windows 95 and 98 but didnt' know if it could be done with XP.

Any and all help will be appreciated!

I installed XP Pro but did not do a new clean installation. I installed XP Pro over a great running Win 98 SE. It installed perfectly from the CD ROM drive.

If you are doing a clean install maybe you should find a Win98 or ME boot floppy disk and boot up from it. That will initialize your CDROM drive so it works in DOS. Then you can use your CDROM drive to install XP Pro.

Your hard drive allready partitioned should be no problem as long if your C: drive / partition is large enough to install XP Pro onto it.

I do not install any programs on C: but install them all on the HD partitions starting with D:.

If your computer can boot from the CDROM drive that is the easiest way to install XP Pro from its install CD.

If you boot from a floppy and can then connect to the CD or a network (basically anyway to copy the files over), you can copy them and then run winnt.exe from the i386 dir to start the setup. The funpart will be getting them over, but even laplink or fx might work if you have an old serial or parallel cable around.

Good luck,

I would also be sure to use smartdrive if you're going to copy the files to your drive. This will make a big difference!

Thanks for the tip.....I used to copy the win95 and win98
folder over to the hard drive and run setup with windows 95 and 98
and that worked but didn't know if XP would allow it or not.

Can't wait to try it out!
