Hello everyone,
So i tried repair first and it said 39 minutes remaining but it took 5 hours. I then tried the regular winxp install i formatted (quick) and ran the install, it rebooted when it said so then when winxp splash screen was loading it hung in a black screen and then it said "SETUP IS restarting" and then kaput that same 5 hour screen and winxp wont load... I tried this various times to no avail...

So i went ahead and tried http://www.memtest86.com to see if my memory was bad... I ran 3 passes, it found 4 errors all under test 5.

I took the memory out put it back in and ran 1 pass, no errors.

I rebooted and ran the test again and it found 2 errors once again under test 5.

So now im running http://user.rol.ru/~dxover/speedsys/ (speedsys) to make sure my Hard Drive is running properly and all... So far its looking good...

Is it possible that bad memory was causing the problem? And would have a throrough format mattered?

Thanks

It does sound like memory. If you have two sticks take one out and try it, if it still fails take that one out and put the first one in and give it a go.

If you only have 1 stick you'll have to find a replacement, maybe from another PC you have? Good luck!

Switched out memory, tried to do the throrough reformat, and it stayed at 0% for hours, tried to instal Linux Red Hat and it took 30min to partition 10% of a 300mb section... What gives?!?

ive had similar problems installing winxp.. i also ran memtest86 and the memory produced errors durring test5

replacing the ram fixed the problem :)

by the way is the ram running at default specs? if not you may want to turn down the memory settings

by the way.. when it produced errors durring test 5 it was only 1 or 2 errors, and they only came up about once every couple of passes (some passes had no errors at all)
