Windows XP IE problem

QueBert

Lifer
GF's has XP with SP2 installed, recently her IE started to act up, she tried installing IE7 but it didn't help so she rolled the system back. IE opens but won't load pages, she gets no error message just a blank IE page,

Also her Zune won't sync, I'm guessing the Zune software uses IE for the frontend. Firefox and everything else functions normally. I tried to have her do the repair thing of IE with

1. Start Internet Explorer 7.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.

she said it popped up an error box of some sort telling her ieexplorer.exe wasn't found and it couldn't continue. Aside from this her system is running as it usually does. She's in SD and in not able to drive out there today to fix it, she's not comfortable of doing a repair install of XP by herself (I told her how easy it is) What else should I tell her to try? I figured upgrading to IE7 would fix it, nope. the repair of IE6 also went nowhere fast.

help?
thanks 🙂

If "ieexplore.exe" isn't a typo, you have some cleanup to do.

Either way I'd use hijackthis to remove all BHOs, toolbars, and DPFs. Also go into the internet options and disable all plug-ins. IE should work. Then begin restoring the plug-ings, BHOs, toolbars, DPFs, until IE breaks again. Then you have your answer.

crap sorry it was a typo DOH it's iexplorer.exe, I had her run hijackthis we cleaned up a few possibly nasty entries. Still having problems but we're still working on it.

The real Internet Explorer is iexplore.exe. At any rate, you might want to see if she's interested in trying a non-Administrator user account and/or some other security tips.

And if she needs a better antivirus software, AntiVir has the best detection rates of any free antivirus (and better than most paid ones, too): http://www.free-av.com

thanks for the tips, she's running AntiVIR, fixed the IE problem, dunno if it was it but hijackthis was showing the same dll for the logitech setipoint 77 times, we cleared that out and it seems to be ok. She's still having small isssues but the box was upgraded from 98 and I don't think we've ever done a clean install of XP. I'm trying to tell her it's about time for one 🙂
