"For consumer products, security updates will be available through the end of the mainstream phase. For Windows XP Home Edition, there will be no security updates after 12/31/06." Regarding paid support for problems unrelated to security patches, I was told that "Users who want to continue to receive support after the Microsoft assisted and paid support offerings have ended may visit the Retired Product Support Options Web site."

That's just one journalists interpretation of what one ms spokesman said. MS isn't that stupid.

MSFT said through 2008. Can't find the link ATM though.

EDIT:

After outcry around the revelation that Microsoft was due to phase out all support for Windows XP Home Edition by the end of 2006, it seems that the Redmondians have relented. In an updated note, Microsoft has added a caveat to its Windows lifecycle chart, noting that the company now plans to continue to provide mainstream support for all of its XP products (Home, professional, Embedded, Media Center and Tablet Editions) for two years after the next version of each product is released. For XP Home, that will likely mean that mainstream support will be extended through 2008. Ditto for XP Professional, which also should get a longer grace period for Extended (paid) Support as a result, probably through 2013, we're betting.

I may and probably am wrong, but it was my impression that MCE was considered as XP Home, which is why it can be sold at a lower price than XP Professional. If this is, in fact, true - aren't there quite a few recently sold MCE machines out there that would be without updates?

F*CK WINDOWS XP HOME! Grr, it pisses me off when friends with XP Home come over for LAN parties. Sometimes their systems will just NOT cooperate in LAN games. *grumble*

Why did you wait so long? Windows 2000 was released over 5 years ago (you were at least running Win2K, right?), that is an eternity in the PC world.

I plan on buying Vista the day it is released, which is a first for me. Why people insist on clinging to antiquated OS's is beyond me.

That being said if this info was true MS is stupid for even SUGGESTING they would end support in 2006. That is absolutely absurd.

Why wait so long? Maybe because it was running well, suited the needs and there was no need to shell out $75 to $200 to upgrade to WinXP Home or Pro any earlier? I run Win2k on my work laptop with no trouble. I finally did have to upgrade it to SP4 a few months ago because new Omron automation software need SP3 or higher (or XP with SP2 or higher). Sometimes, upgrading isn't needed or wanted.

As to why upgrade now (as the OP you quoted suggested)? Maybe new software/hardware/etc. needed it?

Please break in Vista well so that I can have a SP (or two) ready by the time I buy it! ;)

I kept 98 for so long because my hardware/software was compatible with it.
A lot of software runs on 98SE at a minimum.

The main advantages of XP to me are uh... it looks better than 98SE, it supports a gig of RAM, natively supports my USB devices, and is more stable. Win98 on my machine was getting to the point where it would have a lot of hiccups or crashes with mulitimedia stuff. That's what drove me to upgrade.

I also chose that opportunity to replace my case, power supply, monitor, video card, motherboard, processor, memory, keyboard, cpu cooler, and add a new hard drive. So I'm a lot happier now after all the changes.

The point was that not everybody needs (or has money) to run right out and upgrade with every NEW OS! ;)

"Stock software" is bad? The last thing I want riced up is my computer.

I'm running two XP Home systems along with two XP Pro systems on our home network. When my cousins come over with their XP Home laptops, they join without any trouble. WC3 and UT2k5 games will run just fine. I remember trying to LAN a bunch of Win98 and Win2k machines 6 or 7 years ago, which was pretty painful, but WinXP couldn't be easier to setup on a LAN.
