Windows XP hangs on boot

I have a Windows XP machine that is a member of a 2003 domain. When I try to boot the machine it hangs at the blue desktop prior to showing the network login prompt. I've tried booting in safe mode and with the last known good configuration and it does this for each of them. I'm a complete failure with the recovery console so I'm not sure what that can do for me, especially since I can't find out what's causing the system to hang in this manner since I can't get to the event viewer. Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks.
