Windows XP Freezes (need help)

I just bought an OEM copy of MS Windows XP Pro full version from MWave yesterday and installed it. Now everything was running fine until I started downloading something from the internet like a large file or tried to sign on to some chat program like Yahoo chat. As soon as I opened the webpage or began the download the CPU usage went up to 100% and froze for about 10 seconds and CPU Usage went back down to 0% and every 10 seconds it would shoot back up to 100% and freeze. I can't do anything because of the time gap that it freezes up, i'm forced to Hard reboot. I can't figure why it does this. Anyone ever have a problem like this? I never had any problem while using windows 2000.

I'm currently running

ABit KR7A 133R KT266A
Athlon XP 1900+ @ 1600MHz
256mb Corsair PC2700 @ CAS2
Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB
GeForce 3Ti 200 @ 205/422
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz

ME too but i have had my system for about 6 weeks and that started two days ago??? the only trhing i have done is update my vid card drivers............. help us here guys!!

Can you see what processess are running when this happens? Sounds like it could be the Background Intelligent Services. Have you run Windows Update yet?

Just ran windows update and it installed 22 new programs and patches but it still continues to freeze if I try signing on chat programs or download large files. I tried to check what processes are running but it freezes up before I can open it. I opened task manager and tried to see what was running before and didn't see any background intelligent services running.

now my board is saying processor failed from overclock.............I do not overclock. Is this a battery problem i have read about?

Don't re-format. Thats a stupid thing to do so early on. On do that when you have exhausted every other option.

What chat programs, what webpages?

what about the overclock problem my board stated do you think its the Battery for the motherboard?

I tried logging onto Yahoo Chat and as soon as the chat window appeared it started to freeze up. Then I tried to download a music video off Win MX and as soon as I started downloading it started freezing up again. I can surf the web and play games fine.

Curious....Do you run MSN? Do you get the same error on this too? Is it just off WINMX, or does it do it from a website or ftp server?

Do you have the latest drivers?

I had a problem with my Dell Laptop doing a smiliar thing, and it turned out that the GeForce2Go drivers wtright off the WinXP CD were bad. I eventually got the latest drivers, and it fixed it right up.

do not think its the drivers i have has the system for 7 weeks and its run like a gem... the only drivers i updated were the vid drivers and that was three days after I brought it home. my dealer says its not the memory which i had one bad stick. at least at post it said memory failed took one out that message went away....................keep thinking guys

What kind of memory are you using? There is a known issue with Crucial memory(2700) and that particular board. I happen to have the same board and am having no trouble with Crucial 2700 although others are.
Just on a whim check the temps in your bios and compare them to Asus probe. Could be a hardware problem. In my board the the hardware temps don't agree even a little bit so i will RMA ed the board.
Check your hardware issues first even though it's been running fine previously.

no hardware issues....i am using generic ram but made with micron chipps? thats what i was told anyway. i replaced the cmos battery still no post.🙁 i took the rig back to my dealer and he is insistant that its not memory... so what did I do , I asked him to pull the pc2700 out put in a stick of pc-2100 and try to boot it!! he kinda got a bit peeved but.....too bad i am the customer right? He couldn't do it today(after all its sunday) crossing my fingers it is a memory issue

Keep the ideas comming guys!!
