While browsing the registry (in search of Taskbar grouping settings) I came across "ShowSuperHidden" which makes
Windows XP let you view those "really" hidden files like in Windows 2000.

Also, there is a nice folder called Advanced with more useful Windows settings:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
