Windows XP file - mup.sys

Does anyone know what significance this file has to operating Windows XP? I went to go open up Photoshop last night and my computer froze on me. I hit the reset button after I realized a CRTL+ALT+DEL wasn't going to do any help for me. Now the computer won't start regularly and hangs up on the "mup.sys" when trying to start in safe mode. Does anyone have any suggestions and does the Windows XP CD have a repair OS option?

It's the multiple unc provider (a network resolution provider). Most likely it's not the culprit, but a bad driver is hanging the system and thats the last driver to load. The XP CD does have a repair option, you can also 'install on top' to keep your settings but reinstall the base OS.

Well I tried reinstalling, but after the reboot... I had the same problem. I took out both my SB Live 5.1 OEM and Firewire card and it booted like there was nothing wrong. Who wants to take a guess at the culprit card? 😀
