Windows XP Error Messages - Application Hang

Having recently installed XP for the first time, I am surprised at the instability of my computer...

I have XP Professional (SP 1) installed and am frequently receiving the two following error messages.
Any idea if the two are causing the instability issue together or seperately by themselves? Anyone know how to fix them?

The second almost always means the bios isn't fully supported and needs to be updated (but, on many older systems there aren't updates available).
