I have an USB scanner, which I move to a different spot on my desk and plugged it into a different USB port. Now in the device manager the scanner name has a "#2" after it. Is there any way to remove the previous configuration? I was looking through the regisrty and I tried deleting what I thought would fix the problem: the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_04a9&Pid_220e\6&1d7a5fde&0&3

but windows won't let me....any ideas...

Thanks

I have been messing around with it for a while now, and this is what I know...

Every time I plug the scanner into a different USB port it puts the next higher number after the device name.

I was able to change the permissions in the registry and I was able to delete all instances of the particular device, after which point the it changed to just the device name, without any numbers. But then the buttons on the scanner to email, copy...etc, didn't work propery....argh....I was glad I backed up.

I did what NogginBoink suggested in the Q241257 and I was able to see the devices connected in the past and I was able to uninstall them all after which point, I scanned for hardware changes and it found my scanner and it showed it properly. SO NogginBoink, thanks a lot for the tip, and everyone for replying.
