I am building a computer and i really dont want to spend $100 on Window XP so i borrowed my friends disk, but they came with his dell. I got a virus scan too. I dont have the computer built yet, but the virus scan wont install on my old computer because its not a dell. Will windows do the same thing? I dont really wanna buy it, but if i do wehre is a good place to get it? also, would there be any reason me and a friend couldnt just split the cost of it and both install from the same disk?

the dell xp cd supposedly looks to see if you have a dell bios before it will allow the install to continue!

Yes - product activation. Only machine will be able to activate the copy. You'll need to buy your own. Newegg is always a favorite for decent prices, but you can probably search pricewatch to save a few more bucks.

Just be carefull about some of the companies, their are some bad ones out there. Seems like Newegg is about the best combination of good business practicies and cheap prices (one in the same in a sane world). But that's not to say their are equally respectable companies out there, some with probably some good deals going on.

Caveat Emptor, baby

Also the hundred bucks is a pretty resonable price for a OS, of course I don't pay for OS'es (well I do.. but only when I am impressed or in a good mood) since there are plenty of people out there willing to give OS's away for free. (and I am not talking about those warez bastards either, or p2p networks, can you guess my secret? I'll give you a 2 hints, it involves flightless birds in some way and little guys with pitchforks from the northwest)

Anyways if you like using XP you should also like giving money to Microsoft, after all it's them that went thru all the trouble of making it in the first place. It just doesn't make sense to me why so many people figure they can't do without Windows, but then turn around and try to rip them off at every opertunity.

Don't worry I am not trying to slight you in any way for trying to find a bargin, far from it. It's a sign of intellegence. (although trying to use your freinds copy was a bit shady) It's just a idiot (me) pointing out the obvious again. Forget I said anything...

ya its not a big deal, if i had the money to buy it i would, but i guess i have to wait two weeks for another payday. Would it work fine to just use 2000 for now then switch to xp? we do have 2000 here.

It's always better to do a clean install. But going from 2000 to xp should certainly be less painful than 9x to xp.

I've loaded a Dell XP Home on a non-Dell system without any problems at all. I guess there are different Dell OEM disks floating around.
