windows xp defragger or 3rd party util?

random question.

how good is the windows xp defrag program? (i use fat32 for now but will move to ntsf in a couple weeks - if its relevant at all)

should i use a 3rd party defrag program or is there really no use cuz the windows one is good enough?

I have tried out Norton Speeddisk & Perfectdisk and they were good for scheduling defrags & nothing else. I prefer the winXP defragger over any 3rd party scan.

Diskeeper is the best. Windows 2k and XP both have a very, very stripped down version built in for defragging. With the full retail version I can usually defrag my entire 20gb NTFS partition in under 10 secs!!

Well one reason is because it puts the pagefile on the outer or fastest accessed part of your hard drive, the beginning of your hard drive if you will. So if your setup needs to use the pagefile then it can do it quicker with less lag. You can also tell the defragger in what order to put the files in so you can access them faster.

Well let's see....XP's defragger was started one night on a 100 GB drive (fat32). Nine hours later it was an incredible 22% complete. I'd say it's next to worthless.

No way. The read/write harddrive speads couldn't defrag that much data unless there are hardly any files to defrag.

No way. The read/write harddrive speads couldn't defrag that much data unless there are hardly any files to defrag.

I guess I should have worded that different. It does in fact only take about 10 secs to defrag my drive. The reason it goes so fast is because I defrag my HD daily so there really is little fragmentation.

But..Even if you have a very fraggmented large HD you should be able to defrag it in under 30-45 mins with Diskeeper 7

I favor using O&O's defragger. Diskeeper is fine as well as a defragger but I don't like supporting scientology companies.

O&O degfragger is good too. (well anything is better than the built in one). I never knew that the makers of diskeeper were supporters of scientology. Even though I don't believe in god those people have major issues.

Hehe LostHiWay, daily defrags own. I do it as well and I routinely defrag my 40GB drive in under a minute, and almost always under 3 minutes. The old saying is, if you notice a significant improvement in speed after defragging, you've put it off for too long...

Better? Debateable. But it is faster. I'm thinking of trying it since todays hard drives are getting so large that if fragmented, it will take a little while.

Thanks for the heads up, I just might try it out too. I am a Nortons Utility user in a big way but only a couple of the utilities do I use like WinDoctor, DiskDoctor, and Speed disk. The rest to me is just pure junk

But I do like/need a good defrag utility. BTW, have you ever used PowerQuest's Partition Magic ? I just got it and I'll be trying it out for the first time when I put in my new mobo/ram/cpu tonight (I got the Asus A7V333, Samsung 256DDR, and AMD|1900+).
