Windows XP Defrag Problems

Hey well im new to the forum and i've been having a problem with my computer. Im running Windows XP Professional and when i go to defrag i first analize it and then it says it needs to be defraged. When i go to actually defrag it, it displays at the bottom -> Compressing Files 1%... and then never goes any further. How do i get this damn thing to work, i have no idea. Ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Try to defrag in safe mode. In normal mode you can lots of background processes writing to the disk and the defrag may never complete. Also be aware if you have a slow (5400rpm) hard drive and lots of files it can take many many hours to complete.

suggest you go into msconfig, boot.ini tab & in the boot options section select /SAFEBOOT and minimal.
restart your pc & it will start in safe mode.
don't forget to undo your changes to get back to normal startup! 🙂

Or you could start tapping F8 just as soon as you power on computer.. this will bring up a startup menu where you can choose safe mode.

If you are running a virus scan program, make sure to disable it before trying to defrag! That may help you.....I was haveing the same problem defragging, 'til I turned off Norton!

good luck

bacillus,

How odd.. dont have any problem doing it at all.. with XP standalones and my one dual booting. Although it doesnt look like the regular startup menu.. it does give an option to boot into safe mode.... 3 different safe modes..

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode command prompt

Wierd.

This may not be what you are wanting to hear but I would not bother trung to get the packaged Defrag utility to work instead consider buy a 3rd party defrag utility, Diskeeper 7 is probably the best.
