Windows XP deafault font ...

Try switching the theme to the classic theme and back to the normal XP theme. Or try "restore defaults" somewhere in the XP display settings area. I haven't used XP in a while so I'm getting cloudy as to where those options lie. But I know forcing the settings back to normal shouldn't be impossible.
 
You can probably do it manually. The default font is Tahoma. Right click desktop, properties, appearance?(I'm on Vista, hard to remember), advanced. Use the drop down box to select different window elements, and change the font to Tahoma.
 
That is exactly correct. Desktop Properties/Appearance,/Advanced - then choose your desired default font and size, etc. I prefer Verdana to Tahoma - similar but easier for me to read.
