WOW this sux so much. for lack of better words. M$ has made it very hard to customize anything .I found a few links and wow its hard to do.

Check out ThemeXP for WinXP visual customization; and TweakXP for performance related WinXP tweaks.

try neowin.net there's an entire section dedicated to customizing windows and it's not that hard.

The Boot Screens can be changed with a program
The Icons can be can be changed with a program
The visual style can be changed with a dll patch

about 10 minutes and windows will look completely different.
