I have this exact same problem...after a while it refuses to let me open anything (even Task Manager refuses to load). Very strange...Hopefully someone knows what causes this. So...bump! ;)

If it helps any, here are my specs:

Abit NF7-S 2.0
Athlon XP 1700+ @ 2400MHz
1024MB Corsair PC3200 RAM
2xWD800BB 80GB in RAID 0
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro

Now, the problem seems not to be affecting me today (*crosses fingers*), but I have done a few things. First, I installed different video drivers because games kept GPF'ing and crashing - but upon more thought, that's probably because I had the AGP speed set at 8x instead of 4x (I've run into that problem before). Also, I was playing UT2003 earlier and the system just hard locked in the middle of a game. No looping sound, just a frozen image on the screen and nothing else. So, I lowered my FSB from 220MHz to 219, and everything seems to be stable now. Also, as I said, the nonworking program thing doesn't seem to be happening right now, and I don't know if what I changed has anything to do with it or not. Still, I suppose it's something to try. If I figure anything else out, I'll post here.

I have had this problem before, it doesn't happen regularly but when it does i give up and reset with the reset switch. It must be some weird flaw in XP. I know one thing i have noticed that causes this though, if a hard drive spins down and XP wants to access it and the hard drive hasn't spun up it freaks.
