If I try setting the workgroup name to my last name, I get the an error stating "The specified workgroup name is invalid".

All the computers at my house currently use my last name as workgroup name, and I just got a new laptop I wanted to add to this workgroup. There must be some conflict somewhere but I can't find out what- it's not a user profile and it's not the computer name, any other possibilities?

Try going into control panel, > double click on system > ( cant remember which tab but ... ) on one of the tab's it will tell you the workgroup name or network ID, with a button next to it to change it. Just hit the button, change the netowrk ID to your last name ( like your other PC's ) and hit apply > ok then reboot. sorted.

If you still cant logon to your network or your netowrk has trouble finding your Laptop, try going to ADMIN CONTROLS and in there under i think security profiles or something, open that up, and tere is a list of protocols, someplace on the list is something like 'network logon : Disabled' or something like that, just look at each network setting there and set accordingly, should be quite self explanitory.
