Windows XP Authenticity & Recomendation

Good Day,

I would like to get some info in Windows XP Pro authenticity before making the step:

[1] Do I have to register to the internet for it to work?

[2] I saw a PC with a non-original copy of winXP, it seemed to work fine ... except the system couldn't do a "Windows Update" to SP1 giving some error like "The Product Key used to install Windows is invalid". Is this somewhat related do point [1]? It seems to work fine ...

[3] I have Windows 98 SE (came with computer). Do you recommend Windows XP or Windows 2000 instead?

PIII600 / 256Mb RAM / 20Gb HD / RIVA TNT2 32Mb

As MS says "Registration is optional, Activation is required".

You can get around activation, but as a result, you'll get #2 on your list. Best bet, get a valid copy and then you don't have to worry about it.

XP is a better OS than Win2k, but that's just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt.
