I'm currently in the market for a version of Windows XP. I start college classes soon, so I was looking to the Academic version of the software.

Anyone know how this works? If I buy it, how do I prove I'm in school?

Thanks

I dunno how newegg is but with other sites they either require your student ID number or a scan of your student ID or something along those lines or possibly even a transcript showing you are currently enrolled

edit: press checkout they give u three blanks, name school and id num

Make sure to check if your school can get you a copy free. I was going to buy XP Pro OEM before school started, but I'm glad I didn't. My school's College of Computing has this MSDN Academic Alliance deal where CS majors get a bunch of free MS software, including XP Pro. You can just download ISO's from MS keys too.

I think OEM is cheaper than academic for Win XP.

I just read that once you graduate, its invalid. Ugh. Ok, next option is:

A) Buy the OEM Pro version. I need the SMP support, and Home doesnt have that. Newegg has it for $149. Is there a better place to buy? Best Buy wants $300!!!!

B) Can't I call MS and purchase a key? I know someone who already has the disks.

How quickly are you planning on graduating? To answer your other questions:

A. $149 is about as cheap as you'll find for OEM XP Pro.
B. You can buy just the license, but it's not going to be much cheaper than $149 I believe (they don't get cheaper unless you buy in bulk).

college? hmmm.. you made it that far? :p (addition vs edition)

edit: just to add some relevancy to the topic:

you linked an xp pro academic upgrade, does this mean you want upgrade from existing legit os? (98, xp home, etc...)

an xp pro academic full would cost more if youre not upgrade (upgrading sucks anyway!)

one last thing: you should try the fs/ft forums here, sometimes we sell xp pro oem for cheap (the requirement being that you have to buy supporting hardware to sell oem, however, the definition of 'hardware' is very lax :))

I'm not advocating any type of piracy here, but MS isn't going to hunt you down once you graduate and force you to buy a new license for XP if you get the academic version. There is no activation required with that version.

That's called stealing (or warezing if you're l337). There are keygens and corp keys for regular XP Pro if you're going to steal it. warcrow is trying to be more ethical than you.

If you don't want to buy it online, retail stores will ask you for id. My bro bought office 03 and win xp academic version from staples and they asked for id before they got it for you.

Go to your college bookstore. They should have it for $5 or $10 through Microsoft Campus Agreement
