Windows XP 64-bit w/x86-64 support announced **CONFIRMED**

Isn't that just a version for Hammer? The 64-bit of XP has been out since the regular version but I assume that's just the Itanium flavor.

I'm shocked that Microsoft would support the AMD hammer I thought they would leave it all alone to Linux 64 🙂

Of course Windows XP 64 bit will cost $1000's cause you know that compiling is hard work.

Have you ported any 32-bit programs to a 64-bit arch? Let a lone an OS.

I'm not saying MS had to do a total rewrite, but it's not just a recompile either.

I still don't understand. 64-bit XP has been out since September. I have it. (nothing to run it on of course)

Are all these announcements just saying that the AMD chip will work with 64-bit XP? If so, I don't see that as newsworthy - I would assume that of course AMD's 64-bit processor will be compatible with Intels just as their 32-bit chips are compatible.

Does this announcement mean that Microsoft had to do something special to make 64-bit XP work with AMD 64-bit chips?

Someone?

Perhaps this might answer your questions...

I guess I'm still daft. 🙂 That link says a 'home' version a 'professional' version and a 'server' version for AMD. Does that mean different versions 64-bit XP than the one already available for Intel chips or are they just pointing out the fact that it will work on AMD chips as well as the current Intel ones?

I guess my question is: Will the 64-bit XP CD that I am currently staring at run on AMD's 64-bit processor or will there be an 'AMD' version of it? And if so, I guess the next logical question would be do we have to purchase AMD or Intel specific versions of 64-bit software?

Or maybe I should just go to bed.

have Uall read that 64bit article by one of the users who frequents the Highly Technical forum? It's somewhere here in the Anand. but I can't find it.

anywho, does that shed any light on this subject? From what I understood in it, I don't think that 64bit processing is going to change our lives very much - maybe CAD users, but not us...

x86-64 being developed by AMD is just 64-bit extensions to the old x86, IA-64 being developed by Intel is totally different and will be 100% incompatible with AMD's 64-bit chips and all the 32-bit 'Intel compatible' x86 chips.

You have an IA-64 CD, unless it has an i386 folder you're out of luck. And even if it did, you'd be running it in 32-bit mode instead of 64-bit because AMD's Hammer can run both, unlike IA-64.
