Windows XP 32 bit / 64 bit LAN

I just started using Windows XP x64 on my new computer, but I can't connect to my network in order to transfer files to my new computer. Is this not possible because the operating systems are not compatible, or is there some sort of work-around?

Please supply more information.

1) How many pc's on your LAN?
2) What operating systems do the other pc's use?
3) Can all pc's including your x64 access the internet?
4) What brand and model of switch/hub/router?

To answer your original question, no.

This could be a driver/NIC issue or a problem anywhere in between. Or, it is a connection issue with a default setting in the OS. If you created the computer with no password, that could possibly be the start of the issue (there are some features that the install will lock down on certain versions.) It is likely a configuration issue and possibly a driver issue. It could even be a spark gap issue.

Well 2, counting this one, that are physically connected. My PS2 is also connected, and there is a computer on a wireless connection downstairs.

All XP, except this one which is XP 64 bit

Yup

4) What brand and model of switch/hub/router?

Well, I am using fiber optic connection, so tthey gave me a D-Link router, but I also have a Linksys that is connected to other stuff, but I don't think this is really an issue since I tried connecting directly without any hub/router at all and it still didn't show up.

Also, this computer doesn't have any password. The other one does, but the password is nothing.

What kind of driver issues could it be? I think I have all the latest drivers for my hardware on my new computer - I suppose my old one might need an update, but I don't know.

And what is a spark gap issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

i.e. MSHOME or WORKGROUP or WHATEVER

Yeah, it's set up as MSHOME.

You say it cannot connect to the LAN. The driver may appear to be green, but if the router is set for DHCP and you are not getting an IP address, it is the driver or a spark gap.

You asked about spark gap. That is the space between one wire and another that is too wide for the voltage to cross. So, if your network cable is 1" out of the socket, you will need to change the router to run at 20,000 volts. The easier solution is to plug it in though...

Are you getting the green light at the router hub and on the NIC's led? What does IPCONFIG say (use /ALL)

But since this is 64-bit and you have moved cables around, it is either a NIC problem or the 64-bit NIC driver is too buggy. Search for a possible replacement from the maker of the NIC chipset (IPCONFIG /ALL will list it in general, so report back with it.)

shut off the xp 64bit software firewall and any other software firewall (nvdia, zone alarm..etc ) ON THAT PC, and see if you can acess the network shares.

Just so you know, I got it working - thanks for the help. The problem was I had zonealarm on my 32 bit machine running, and shutting it off screwed it up. I can just turn it back on when i'm done moving stuff.

Speaking of which, I wasn't able to install zonealarm or Norton on my new PC (couldn't handle 64 bit I guess). Does anybody have any suggestions on what antivirus/firewall stuff would work on an x64 machine?
