windows works fine, but it takes 10 freakin' minutes to boot up!

this a wierd problem. . . windows was booting up really fast then after a restart it starting taking 5 minutes to boot. after the xp logo the screen goes blank for about 4 min then after you get to the desktop wallpaper you have to wait another couple minutes. once the icons appear it's super fast! what are some possible causes for this?

same exact problem im having with my post sp2 install. exactly the same issue.

specs are as follows

axp 2.4
512 of pc3200
raptor SATA HDD

shouldnt take freakin 5 mins to boot.
prior to sp2 it took about 20 secs.

Defrag your HD. Norton said I was only 15% fragmented but I defragged anyway and that helped alot. Still, it boots up slower than before the update but much faster when I defragged.

Exact same thing happened to a co-worker's machine, the only thing in common he has with you in the CPU.
I'm trying to help him out and find an answer, hopefully someone will discover something that SP2 changes to cause this.

Look at your IDE controller settings in device manager. Make sure they're set to DMA instead of PIO

SATA, not IDE.

and yes, my storage HDD is still using DMA.

a reinstall might be in order this weekend.

You guys might want to check your event log to see if there are any clues. A lot of times, a boot delay is the result of Windows searching for a DHCP server. If you haven't already, set your network cards to static IPs (i.e. 192.168.0.34) and see if that doesn't solve the problem. Finally, make sure you're not running any unnecessary services. Good luck!

It may be hanging up on something, you may want to try doing a clean boot by running msconfig and de-selecting everything in startup and if that helps it may be one of your startup programs. just a thought.

Try booting in Safe mode. If it's faster then you've probably got a device driver that is failing and eventually timing out. Safe mode loads only necessary boot-time drivers.

If you still hang, then we'll need to investigate some more... like where exactly the hang is taking place in the boot process.

My money is still on a driver at the moment.
