When I go to microsoft.com and try to update I get this error: "Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer." If anyone know what I need to do I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I've also gotten this same issue when the PC's clock/calendar were way off. Check time/date/year.

I've got a full legit version, and the date/time is correct, but still no dice.

Saw this in a newsgroup post, it might help you. Copy and paste the following into Notepad or Wordpad and save as "IEReg.bat" (use the double-quotes so the file doesn't get named IEReg.bat.txt). Double click the file and see if your problem goes away.

In C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files, do you see a MUWebControl Class object? Can you right-click it and click Remove? If so, can you go back to the Microsoft Update page and try to reinstall it?

The easyest way is to use the auto up date in control panal and use the link to install updates.

I thought this might be an ActiveX issue, but I set my internet settings to low securitry for a little bit and tried to update, thinking that before it wouldn't let me download the MUWebControl Class object, but I still am having the same problem.

Surprisingly it is not an Active-X issue. If you go in to Control Panel There should be and automatic updates icon open this up and there will be several options the last one is turn auto update off. There is a line there says Install updates from the Windows update website click on this and it will open the update window. Will give you the option of express or custom update.

Did you disabled the Automatic Updates services in Windows XP? If so at least set it to Manual. Windows Update uses that service to install the update.

Hmm, when I try to install it, it says that windows update agent is already installed. What should I delete so I can use this to reinstall it.

It says that: "Windows Update Agent not found, or the computer is not running Windows 2000 SP3 or later." But when i try to install Windows Update Agent, that says it is already installed.

Click start, run, then type services.msc. Make sure you have Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Event Log, and Automatic Updates on automatic.
Thats all I can think of... Hope you get it fixed.

Try this:

Register MSXML3.dll and see if it helps:

1. Click Start.

2. Choose Run.

3. In the Run box, type (or copy/paste from this post)

%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\MSXML3.dll

(note the space there in the middle)

4. Click OK.
