windows wont shut off my monitor!

i have my crt monitor set to turn off after 15 minutes of inactivity. however, sometimes, it just decides not to turn off. like today, i left for school, and when i came back, it was on. and then i left for 2 hours, and when i came back it was on again. this is not the first instance of this problem either. i cant figure it out at all.

maybe it's your mouse... my friend had a bad mouse which it moved a little time to time..(not physical movement)

maybe it's your mouse cord, sometims it gets folded and at later time unfolds... arg.. i don't know how to explain this.. but anyhow.. it's usually mouse for me.

yeah, i know what you mean. but the strange thing is, this only happends some of the time, and you think the mouse cord would have straightened out over the course of 7 hours, right?

Some CRT monitors don't support standby mode (oddly enough), or cannot interpret the signals received from the OS/video card.

ok, now it started working again, it goes off after exactly 15 mins. i dont understand. i really dont want my monitor to be on all night or something. this thing has to last me a few more years.

It's so simple to just push a button and turn the monitor off when leaving the system. The computer doesn't really care.

And your electric bill will be a bit lower too.

And if you live where I live with A/C on 24/7, your "shack" will be cooler and your electrical savings magnified. The average CRT monitor is like a 400 watt light bulb burning. It produces a lot of heat. 🙂

When you come back to the computer and the monitor isn't off, is Windows Media Player open by any chance?

nope. i dont use windows media player. i didnt have anything open.

btw, the problem isnt that it never shuts off, it just doesnt do it sometimes. like, i will walk out of the room and do something, and when i come back, it will be off. but every once in a while, it wont. and i dont want to use up my monitor, since i cant afford to get another. as for the electric bills, yes i would love it if my parents had plenty of money to send me to harvard 😛

Mine does the same thing, but only if I leave WMP running. If I use Winamp, the monitor shuts off fine. Easily reproduceable. Don't know what else it could be on your case though. 🙁

had you been the one paying the elec bill then i think u would not have any difficulty turning the monitor off everytime you leave it to do some other work 🙂

I put my computer and monitor on a power strip because I have an LCD monitor and it uses a power supply that will stay on and the lights on my mouse and my monitor pannel will stay on.
So after I shut down, my power strip sits on my Tower top and I close that switch and shut all power OFF!!
To start I turn strip on and press my start button on the Tower.

Who's to say he isn't the one paying the electric bill? I'm always certain to turn off my monitor whenever I walk out. It's the times when I fall asleep (as the result of leaving WMP on) at the computer that I have a problem. 😱

About the mouse thing....my MX500 is so old and worn out that once stop moving it, the laser still sees it as if it is moving left a little at a time....so it starts creeping across the screen when the mouse isn't moving.

my mouse is good. its an mx700. i think it is probably some weird glitch in windows where it just decides not to shut off sometimes. also, there are some days where it just doesnt want to go off, so i set it to turn off after 10 mins, and it does. then i set it to 15 mins and it works. until the next time...

This type of behavior (not that specific mouse) is generally the cause.

The system is registering input and doesn't go to sleep. This is not a bug I have seen.
