Windows Wont Restart??

i have windows 98se
and ever since i installed my new MotherBoard, Vid Card, and memory
windows wont restart
it goes to a blank screen and stays there
i have to press the Case reset button to restart it
then when it restarts up it doesnt even go into ScanDisk

it does it in cold start to

please help

hey im having the same problem with winME!

and about the only thing we both have is an nvidia based card.

I have a geforce256
 
Ok, does it boot at all? Tell me what it does do. Does it POST (Power On Self Test)? Count RAM, etc.? Gimme some more detail. It could be any of the new components. Do you see anything at any time? If so you can eliminate the vid card.
 
ya it boots up fine

i see everything all the time

its only when i want to restart my computer it goes to a black screen and stays there
it even does it when i cold restart(holding down the shift key and restarting)

anything else??
 
This WILL fix your problem:

You have an SBLive? Then you need to do the following, otherwise Win98 won't restart/shutdown properly:

Enable LPT Interrupt Sharing in the SB Emulation Device in the device manager.

Disable the DOS SB Emulation in the device manager (optional).

Set IRQ 5 Reserved to Yes in PCI/PNP Resource Exclusion list in the BIOS.

Disable Legacy USB in the BIOS.

i did everythin below xcept
i dont have DOS SB Emu in my Device Manager??

but now i have an unknown device in USB Controllers

and it also stops for like 10-15 secs when it first loads my wallpaper and all you see is my wallpaper and the mouse pointer??
why is that happening??

and why do i now have 2 USB root hub??

please help me

 
Sorry...the device is called Creative SB16 Emulation. You don't have to disable it.

You have 2USB root hubs because of the i815E/P chipset. One set of hubs in the ATX stack, and the other set of hubs on the bracket.

Reboot again and see if that pause is still there.

why is that still happening??

and the unknown device was my Logitech USB joystick

Andy i did everything u said now i still have the pause and now it wont recognize my USB hub??
its the hub from my Sony A200 monitor

Check if there are upgrades to the mainboard drivers, i.e. agp, usb, etc....this is where the core of alot of these problems usually is.
 
Which BIOS are you using? You might want to try the latest beta BIOS, version 1006 beta 003.

If you are having USB problems, you might want to enable legacy USB support again.

[Edit]: BIOS 1006 Final just came through on the German servers. Grab that instead.
 
No need to burn it onto a CD. Simply run AFLASH.EXE from the DOS Prompt and then enter 1006c.bin when prompted for a file name.
 
Restart your Computer in DOS mode. You CANNOT do this from a DOS Window.

Ideally, what you want to do is make a clean boot disk. Insert a blank floppy into the drive, do a format /s, then copy AFLASH.EXE and 1006.bin to it. Boot up from the floppy, run AFLASH, type in a:\1006.bin for the filename of the BIOS Update, then proceed with the flash.

 
Your computer will slow down on boot up if you have something that it just can't seem to load up properly. I just live with my problem. Sound is fine out of my speakers and Altec Lansing doesn't make a USB driver for my speakers. OH well, tough for me.
