Windows won't boot, BSOD XP

My parents were using their computer when it developed this problem. Windows will not boot, you get the page that offers safe mode among others and none of them work. I talked to a tech friend who guided me to use the recovery console and run chkdsk /r. Chkdsk /r found one or more errors and fixed them but still no boot. My friend then mentioned the possibility that there is a conflict with Service pack 3, so as a troubleshooting measure I uninstalled service pack 3. still no boot. I'm trying to save some important files that are on the HDD before I have to take more drastic measures. I was at one site that recommended to run fixboot and fixmbr. I did run fixboot but when I attempted to fixmbr, I was cautioned that this could ruin the data on the disc if everything wasn't as it needed to be. I decided to save fixmbr for a last chance measure, and seek other sources. So here I am looking for some good info, perhaps someone can tell me where I can get the info I need. I did go to Microsoft and I don't think I was finding the correct page to post my problem. Help!
