windows wont boot after new MSI mobo installed

my windows xp was working fine.
sold the old mobo with cpu and mem for the new MSI k7n2g, new ram, and new cpu.
i think i installed the jumpers and cables properly. when all was ready, booting up windows xp gave me the BSOD, with this: "a prob has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your comp
tech info: STOP 0X0000007B"

Am i SOL? i havent install new mobos ever..... is this typical, where when installing new mobos, i would have to reinstall everything????

Yes. You can't just switch the motherboard and use the old OS intallation. You must reinstall.
 
$50 says you went from a VIA chipset to an nForce chipset...

So, yes, it is reinstall time. But, if you want your information off your old drive, install XP on a new hard drive (set as master via jumpers). Then, put your old hard drive back in (on the same cable, set as slave via jumper). Also, make sure the master is on the end of the cable, slave on the middle. Then, when you bring up Windows, you'll see the new hard drive and be able to drag and drop your files from your old hard drive to your new. Remove the old hard drive when you are done, or leave it there and format for the extra space.

Unfortunately, this won't work for apps; you'll have to completely reinstall them, too...

All that needs to be done is to go through the install routine. It will ask if you want to install fresh or repair the OS. This is not the repair console that you see at the beginning, it is later on. Choose repair and you will have a fully functional winXP OS with all of your program and files intact. You will only need to re-install drivers and security updates and such.

I am surprised people don't know this already as there is a FAQ on Anandtech about it too.
 
ok, im reinstalling win xp now. heres a more serious problem...
apparently, im not the only one experiencing it too!

After installing and going through win xp setup of driver install, the machine will give a BSOD and it reboots before I can read the error.
rebooting, it goes into restarting setup, and the same chaos would begin anew.
im seeing a lot of things for a first time, being a newbie that im....
 
Well, you're going to have to tell us more about your setup (parts used) and how you went about installing Windows (fresh format and install or other). But, offhand, I would guess that you are having memory problems - try memtest86. Next guess would be not enough power.

A BSOD during the install means you probably have some bad hardware somewhere or something isn't setup right. Double check all physical connections...RAM and vid card seating...check to make sure no metal case parts are contacting the mobo (especially the IO shield!!!). Double check all of your settings in the BIOS. Load the fail safe or optimized settings if they are there. Set your RAM timings to the most relaxed settings. How about temps? What does the BIOS say the CPU is cooking at?

It would help if you posted your system specs. We're not mind readers 😀
 
Not sure about the nforce but I've done five mb swaps and reinstalled XP over top of the old setup, preserving all the data on the computer and only losing updates & settings.

Its been from incompatible chipsets as well, BX to Via to Amd and Via to Via.

I've also found settings & transfer wizard to be very useful from hd to hd, computer to computer or saved on a disk.

What video card are you using? This can be an issue. I was having the same trouble with my 8RDA+ and it turns out that it did not like my KyroII card and was not compatible with it. I had to buy a new card. So what type of video card are you trying to use.
