windows will not shutdown

Homerboy

Lifer
I have a windows 2k pro machine here that will not do a soft shutdown/reboot. If I choose "shut down" or "restart" it will just go to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and just sit there (30mins+).

The only way to get it to restart is to hit the rest/power button.

The kicker is there are 3 windows updates that have been applied and require a restart to complete installation.... but because windows isn't shutting down "naturally" those 3 patches will not apply.

Suggestions?

You can also check your mainboard's BIOS for the ACPI/M type and that it is enabled. Some people have reported that enabling ACPI/M in the BIOS after the installation of Win2K does not work and may require a repair installation of Win2K.

Some of these sites may also help:

Thanks for the suggestions... I will add this is a NEW issue, not on a fresh install. Install is likley 2+years old at this point. Issue just started last week.

Ah, so it's probably some piece of software that was installed recently - would be my guess. Try booting into safemode and shutting down. If it works fine, there is something running in normal mode that is preventing the system from shutting down completely.

Run through those 2 sites and see if anything rings a bell.

Good luck/

I hada machine does this With Win2k. It ended up being the motherboard. whatever there is in the BIOS that controls ACPI stopped working. I just left the machine on and never updated it. lol
