I have been having problems lately shutting my computer down. Sometimes I will hit shutdown, and the computer restarts. Sometimes the computer just locks up on the "windows is shutting down" screen. When the computer locks I have to manually turn it off by holding down the power button. Even when I do get it turned off a while later I will come by and the computer is mysteriously running with power on.

I have also been getting a lot of windows protection errors lately. I then go into command prompt only, go to scanreg and have to start the computer from a previous cab.

I have Panda antivirus and firewall that is current. I have run spybot and ad-aware. Still having probs! Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!!

You've got something running that you shouldn't be, or something is corrupted. Try checking out Trendmicro's website and run their AV and antispyware programs and see what turns up. Check your startup and see what is coming on with your computer, mind you this isn't comphrensive, but it does a good job. Have you run your AV, spybot and adaware in safe mode? What type of firewall do you have? It may be corrupt drivers, what's your computers specs?. There really is a lot you can do to run solve the problem. Good luck!

Thanks

I will try updating drivers. I have done the video drivers before so I know how to do them. But I do not know how to find what sound card I have to be able to update drivers.

Corrupt drivers or drivers needing to be updated kinda makes sense. Lately one of the games I play always messes up the screen resolution on the desktop when I exit the game.

Any help on updating sound card drivers would be appreciated.

Thanks

In the control panel under system devives I found that the sound card is a "Creative Soundblaster AudioPCI 128" I found newer drivers for it but when I try to install them the installation wizzard says no Creative Soundblaster is found. But in the device manager it says there is a soundblaster card and it is working???

I downloaded the program above, and it says I have a Esoniq Tazer sound card. The only drivers I could find for it I downloaded. When I tried to install it said I already I alredy had better drivers, and would continue using them.

I would try buying a new sound card, but it looks like this one is integrated to the mother board.

There's your trouble. I would actually open up the case and have a look-see at the card. My guess is Windows XP decided you had a different sound card than you do and installed the wrong drivers. You can approach this in various ways; if the sound card is integrated download the drivers from the motherboard manufacturing website, if it's a dell/hp/ibm/etc go to their respective websites and get those drivers. Go into control panel and remove the sound card from the system hardware. Restart the computer and install the drivers. If the card is a stand alone go to the appropriate website, grab drivers and essentially do the same thing. Good luck!
