Windows Vsita Business OEM or Home Basic Full for £58?

Was browsing on a site where I buy most of my stuff, and came across Vista Business 64-bit OEM for £58, and Vista Home Basic 32-bit with info to obtain 64-bit for the same price.

Had no intention of upgrading to Vista any time soon, but these both seem like really good prices to me.

I am really tempted to get the business version, as I would like the full system backup and restore functionality.

I am a bit hesitant going OEM, as it might make hardware upgrades in the future a pain, but at that price, might still be worth it.

I take it this version would still be good for gaming, etc?

Gaming is the same on all versions. Business is the way to go because it will give you everything Home basic does, plus you can use transparencies, and the backup stuff. And if you ever need to use it on a domain or want to be able to RDP to another machine in your network, you can do it with Business.

Yup, gaming should be identical on all versions. I think the only thing you'd possibly miss from Home Premium is the Media Center functionality.

Edit: Oops, didn't see that it was Home Basic and not Premium. Business all the way.

Home basic is junk. There's no choice here.

I think MS just threw it in for people who are buying e-machines etc. But even those I would think some with some premium edition or something that allows for media features (like media center edition).

Oh well, went ahead and ordered the business version. Should be something fun to play with over the long weekend.

Finally get to see what all the fuss is about 🙂

What? AFAIK its just not got Aero, which imo is useless fluff anyway.

And why would it be slower than XP?

Surely that would be down to drivers, (for example, Nvidia's crappy drivers) which would hopefully be resolved in the future.

No, it is slower than XP in all things...disk access etc etc. WIthout superfetch working it's like a slug stuck in molassis. Aero is not useless fluff as you call it, in fact it makes Windows more enjoyable to use. Flip 3D is very nice itself. Home Basic also does not include the backup software that the other versions do. You don't get DVD Maker, media center, movie maker in HD or windows meeting space which is really nice for small networks that need to share things between each computer easily.

Say what you want, but an OS that looks good is very appealing to many people. Look at MacOS X. It is a very much filled with eye-candy.

Vista basic should run the same speed as all the other editions of Vista. If it runs slower than XP, then so do all the other editions of Vista.

I would also say that most of what you've listed; dvd maker, movie maker etc, is useless junk and bloat to me anyway and I'd be glad not to have them installed.

I like to use an OS as a base for running my applications. I don't need extra fluff and garbage. Eye candy is all very nice, but it doesn't actually help you do anything productive.
