Windows Vista's Sleep mode burns my CPU

Hi guys! I dont know if this is the right place to post this or not but, I am posting anyway...I recently got Windows Vista Ultimate edition, and I am loving it, apart from some driver problems and bugs...Anyway, I tried the Sleep function in Windows Vista (puts the computer in a low power state)...

The problem is that when in Sleep mode, everything turns off, as if the computer was actually switched off. The only thing different from a computer shutdown, is that the power LED blinks slowly....The problem is that all the fans in the computer turn off. The CPU fan (sitting on top of the CPU) turn off as well, even though the CPU itself is still on !!

This causes the CPU to heat up at all exponential rate!!! I have MBM 5 installed in my Vista, so I tried a little experiment. I put the computer in Sleep mode, noting that the CPU's temperature right before going into Sleep mode was about 41*C.....After remaining in sleep mode for about 45 seconds, I turned the system back on..The temperature for now 60*C!!!!!!! In fact, the system has become so hot, that it immediately shutdown !!

Is anyone else here also experiencing this problem ?? Is there any solution to this ?

Thanx in advance

It shouldn't overheat that much if the cool 'n quiet is on.

As for a solution, plugging the fan straight into the PSU will keep it on.

I just can't digest the fact that Microsoft could have overlooked this thing...or is it just me...I tried searching on google for people having similar problems, but I didnt find anything...weird...

That's weird :S Any sleep mode shouldn't cause a CPU to overheat, afterall it'd be poor by design if it did, seeing as it's Vista it might just be a bug. it's also possible that maybe you need to update the BIOS of your motherboard, maybe the current version is shutting things down enough? I haven't a clue tbh though.

When I first wake mine from sleep mode the temp is within a couple of degrees of ambient. Something clearly ain't right with yours.

I'm using Vista Ultimate Edition 64-bit. CPU is Pentium D 945; never had heat issue when put the computer into sleep mode.

ACPI suspend type is S1 & S3 - try switching to just S3 if you want it to shut down completely in sleep (but wake to whatever you were doing before) or just S1 for normal "fan on" sleep mode.

Do you have the latest BIOS, and the latest MoBo drivers installed?

Also, where is the CPU fan plugged into? The CPU-fan plug on the MoBo?

Is it actually plugged into the CPU_Fan connector, or just one of the system fan connectors?

Not to hijack, but whats the difference? My CPU's fan plug didnt fit into the "CPU-fan" slot on the mobo...do they commonly come with an adaptor so I can put it in there if necessary?

I don't think it is related to where the fan is plugged. When my pc goes to sleep mode, the pc seems completely off. Nothing moves including fans, hard drives, dvdrom etc. The only thing that I can tell if the pc is still on is the yellow light indicator on the motherboard. (evga 680i mb has blue=off; yellow+blue=sleep/hibernate; blue+yellow+green=pc on and active)

I think there is something corrupted with your vista installation. I have run vista on two completely systems and I had not had any issue. Previously I had nForce4 x16 SLI MB + Pentium D 945; and now I have 680i + Q6600.

Do a vista complete pc backup. then format the drive and reinstall vista fresh. Test the sleep mode.
note: vista complete pc backup is not available on basic/home/home premium. Ultimate and Business edition have it. The complete pc backup will restore your pc back to original as before.
You can use 3rd party like Acronis as well.

Gotta agree with the majority here...

I run Vista Home Premium on my lappy, and W2K Pro on my OC'ed P4EE, and have both of them setup to go into "Standby Mode" when I tap the power button. Is this what you mean by 'Sleep mode'?

Neither of them heats up in 'Standby Mode'!

I don't know about the lappy fan - never paid any attention - but the desktop fans keep spinning, no matter what - and I have them plugged into the fan headers on my mobo.

I had some other vista issues too, which are somewhat resolved now. But because of these issues, I formatted my PC about 2-4 times a day, and installed vista again and again....I must have done at least 20 installations of vista now...so even if the OS installation was corrupted once (which I doubt though), it cannot happen everytime, can it ?

If it was me, and I was having this problem, I think I'd just buy a fan controller and bypass the mobo headers altogether.

Controllers are cheap toys and fun to play with... ;)
