Newbie to this site and have a question.

I am building a new system and I purchased MS Ultimate upgrade retail version. When installing this am I going to have to install Windows XP on my new drive and then lay down visa on top of it or can I do a clean install?

Thanks for the help.

On the upgrades you can install Vista twice insead of XP then Vista. The 'first' Vista install do NOT put in your key, this will basically install a demo version. Once that is installed 'upgrade' it and this time put your key in.

Not really other than the usual you might want to collect the various drivers you need beforehand to simplify things.

are there any other differences between the upgrade version and full version? Seems like a waste of money to get full version in that case. Also, how do these differ from oem version?

License wise the upgrade requires a previous version. The OP has XP already, so he's within the license. Feature wise, other than the licesne restriction of this upgrading an old version AND that old versions license can't then be transfered to another machine, the features are the same.

OEM is the same version sold at a discount because it can't be transfered to a new machine later (again its a license restriction not a code or feature set difference)

Also, an OEM disc will NOT allow you to do an upgrade install. A clean install is your only option.
