Windows Vista

Hi, Im just wondering other peoples opinions Windows Vista. I finally got around to reformatting my system and installing Vista onto it. EVerything ran smooth no errors nothing. Got my video and sound card drivers installed. No problems. I found that everything looks a lot more crisp. Text and such. All the new bells and whistles. The Aero thingy. The real time ALT-Tab. I go to play CS and it doesnt feel as smooth cant keep 99 FPS constant (AMD 2.6 GHZ, 7800 GTX, 1 GBram) and I found the accesibilites of the nVidia console not as good. Like the taskbar menu not being there and being able to change the AF/AA/Quality. I just find myself wanting to keep Vista because its new and it looks as one would say "pretty." minimizing, maximizing, closing etc. Anyone else in the same "hole"?

I installed Vista, one of the irst things I did was open a CMD box, I tried to make it full screen it said it wasn't supported! So I promptly uninstalled it. I don't know if the retail will surpport full screen CMD mode, but if it doesn't I won't run it. I do a lot of my stuff in XP in full screen CMD (hate GUI's) I know I'm like 1 in a million with my gripe and general dislike of GUI's. But that was a turn off for me *shrug* Of course I gotta go back into GUI when I run 99% of my programs, but I spend a lot of time in edit and Ztree (Xtree clone) and love the Dos feel

Vista seemed pretty blah for 5 years of development, I mean it looked very slick, I'm sure people will eat the UI up, but what does it do different? XP with a makeover, sure I'm oversimplifying things, but my initial impression was more evolution then revolution.

The problem is with the nVidia drivers. Video (and sound) drivers are very different in Windows Vista, so it will take some time before these newer drivers mature.

If you're a hard-core gamer and feel that anything less than 100 FPS isn't good enough, then you're probably better off sticking with XP until nVidia releases better drivers.

Personally, I've gotten so used to a lot of the new features in Vista that it's hard for me to go back.

Microsoft has added hundreds (if not thousands) of new features to Vista, most of which aren't immediately noticeable. Wikipedia has a fairly exhaustive list here: Features new to Vista.

You sound like you should be using Linux.

Wel thanks for the replies. I see that there is a lot of new features in Vista. But I truly doubt Ill be using them all or near any. I wouldnt catagorize myself as a hard core gamer. Its just that even playing CS 1.6 it doesnt feel as smooth as it should. I dont know I just really like how VIsta looks and the feel of it. BUt I guess that wouldnt be the bets choice. I suppose Ill reformat to Windows XP later tonight. Vista is just so pretty :X

If you like to build and tinker - and this would likely trigger re-registration - do not get any OEM version of Vista or the OEM XP with 'upgrade coupons'.

OEM versions are still restricted to one build and are not transferable to any rebuild or upgrade on your single PC.

Stuck with Retail pricing - but at least you can keep upgrading.

I called Microsoft Vista Pre Sales to verify all I have posted.

You sound like you should be using Linux.

I have a FreeBSD box, and my trusty Novell 3.12 box, Not a fan of GUI's but Microsoft OS's have the software support. If anyone can conform that the retail of Vista can run a CMD box full screen I will upgrade.

Vista is capable of running a command window full screen, I confirm this! Now you gotta buy it!

Open a command window " cmd " in the run dialog, right click on the window banner and in the properties set it to run full screen. Then type " exit " to bail back to Windows Proper.

Why did you think it wouldn't? It is pretty much just like Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

You can upgrade as much as you like the OEM OS is tied to the Motherboard. As long as you don't replace the motherboard you can upgrade. You may have to call Microsoft to reactivate, but that's no big deal either. Its all legal.
